012924 HRC MinutesCITY OF NEW HOPE 4401 XYLON AVENUE NORTH NEW HOPE, MINNESOTA 55428 Human Rights Commission Date: January 29, 2024 Regular Meeting City Hall CALL TO ORDER Chair Curry called the meeting to order at 7:02 pm ROLL CALL Present: Kendra Curry Kaamil Hassan Maria Leon Matthew London Mindy London Allison Isenberg Jeremy Bishop Absent: None City Liaison: Chief Tim Hoyt (absent) Brad Kallio, New Hope Crime Prevention Officer Guests: None AGENDA APPROVAL Commissioner Mindy London made a motion to accept the January 29, 2024 agenda, seconded by Commissioner Hassan. All voted in favor. MINUTES APPROVAL Commissioner Mindy London made a motion to accept the January 29, 2024 minutes, seconded by Commissioner Hassan. All voted in favor. OPEN FORUM ● Mayor Kathi Hemken will not be running for re-election in 2024. There were questions if the next mayor would attend HRC meetings. The mayor is not required to attend HRC meetings but is always welcome. ● Welcomed new HRC member Jeremy Bishop. All commissioners introduced themselves, as did Jeremy ● Commissioner Curry asked Officer Kallio about the Chicago Police Department having a 3rd party that releases their body camera video. Officer Kallio will look into this and bring information back to the group ● Commissioner Curry asked Office Kallio about getting a report on police calls for 2023. Officer Kallio said this will be reported at an upcoming City Council meeting. He will also ask Chief Hoyt to come to an upcoming meeting to discuss this as well. DISCUSSION ITEMS AND REPORTS ● HRC Membership ○ Commissioner Ruiz resigned her position on the commission after the last meeting ○ Commissioner Bishop is joining the commission. ○ We currently have 3 commission openings   ● 2024 Planning & Sub-Committees ● Hispanic Heritage Celebration (Diane) o With Commissioner Ruiz’s resignation, there is not a current lead for this sub-committee. Discussion about finding someone in the community to partner with to continue planning o Parks and Rec also has some Hispanic-related activities this summer including a band and the film Coco that the HRC could be a part of ● Outreach (Matthew) o Community Conversation at HRC meetings - discussion about setting up a quarterly question and inviting community members to open forum for discussion. Could ask questions based on diversity calendar o Discussion about how to increase engagement with the citizens of New Hope o Golden Valley Pride - 6/8/24 - Link on Golden Valley Pride website if anyone is interested in volunteering ● Sunnyside Park Cleanup (Allison) o Will set a spring date at the March meeting ● Colors of the World (Mindy) o Need to start working with Crayola to get donations o Exploring another potential crayon company for this year o Lions and Rotary Partnership - Kaamil ▪ Will work on making connections for this ● Year in Review (Kendra) o March 18, 2024 meeting with City Council o Commissioners Curry and Isenberg will create the presentation for this meeting and present at the March HRC meeting ● Human Rights/Freedom of Speech Event (Kaamil) o Currently in exploratory phase to bring an event to the New Hope Ice Arena ● HRC By-Laws o Commissioners were provided with the HRC By-Laws for review. No recommendations made for changes. Upcoming Meeting Dates: - 2024: 3/4, 4/1, 5/6, 6/3, no July meeting, 8/5, 9/2 (Labor Day – meeting needs to move), 10/7, 11/4, 12/2 - March 18, 2024 - HRC meeting with New Hope City Council - Empty Bowls Event at Cooper High School March 19, 5-7 pm NEW BUSINESS Will need to nominate a co-chair to replace Commissioner Ruiz at the March meeting. Commissioners to consider this position for discussion at next meeting. COMMUNICATION & INFORMATION SHARING Empty Bowls event at Cooper High School March 19, 2024; 5-7 pm NEXT MEETING The next meeting is Monday March 4, 2024 at 7:00 pm ADJOURNMENT Commissioner Matthew London made a motion to adjourn the meeting; seconded by Commissioner Bishop.
