010824 HRC MinutesCITY OF NEW HOPE 4401 XYLON AVENUE NORTH NEW HOPE, MINNESOTA 55428 Human Rights Commission January 8, 2024 Regular Meeting City Hall CALL TO ORDER Chair Curry called the meeting to order at 7:03 pm ROLL CALL Present: Kendra Curry Kaamil Hassan Matthew London Mindy London Diane Ruiz Allison Isenberg Absent: Maria Leon City Liaison:Chief Tim Hoyt (absent) Brad Kallio, New Hope Crime Prevention Officer Guests:Kathi Hemken, Mayor Reece Bertholf, City Manager AGENDA APPROVAL Commissioner Hassan made a motion to accept the January 8, 2024 agenda, seconded by Commissioner Matthew London. All voted in favor. MINUTES APPROVAL Commissioner Ruiz made a motion to accept the December 4, 2023 minutes, seconded by Commissioner Mindy London. All voted in favor. OPEN FORUM Community Conversations ●Commissioner Hassan asked about the ability to have Community Conversations on a monthly basis, inviting community members to monthly HRC meetings and participating in Open Forum. May be helpful to have a leading question. Will consider incorporating this as part of our 2024 sub- committees/goals DISCUSSION ITEMS AND REPORTS HRC Membership ●HRC currently has three openings. Up to two positions can be filled by student members ○Commissioner Matthew London’s term will be ending this summer as he is our student member and will be graduating in June 2024. This will leave a fourth opening ●Community members are always welcome to attend meetings ●Please let the city know if guests will be attending a meeting HRC By-Laws -By-Laws will be reviewed on a yearly basis; these will be reviewed in the February meeting -Any changes/edits will be brought to city council for consideration -All commissioners are to review by-laws in preparation for next meeting and bring any edits/changes to February meeting -Secretary Isenberg to get by-laws and send to the commission for review prior to the meeting 2024 Planning & Sub-Committees ●Discussion about 2024 Sub-Committees/HRC goals: ○Sunnyside Park Cleanup - Lead Allison Isenberg ○Outreach - Lead Matthew London ○Colors of the World - Lead Mindy London ○Hispanic Heritage Celebration (Diane) ■Date confirmed July 20 at Northwood Park. Event will be 11 am-3 pm, park reserved 10 am- 4 pm ■One confirmed vendor (food truck) right now ■Conversation about small businesses also being present ○Year in Review - Lead Kendra Curry ○Event incorporating Human Rights month (December) and Freedom of Speech month (October) - Lead Kaamil Hassan Upcoming Meeting Dates: -2024: 1/29 (Feb mtg), 3/4, 4/1, 5/6, 6/3, no July meeting, 8/5, 9/2 (Labor Day – meeting needs to move), 10/7, 11/4, 12/2 -Note meeting date change for February due to holiday -March 18 - HRC at City Council Work Session (time to be determined and communicated at later date) NEW BUSINESS None COMMUNICATION & INFORMATION SHARING None NEXT MEETING The next meeting is January 29, 2024 at 7:00 pm. ADJOURNMENT Commissioner Hassan made a motion to adjourn the meeting; seconded by Commissioner Matthew London. All voted in favor. The meeting was adjourned at 8:46 pm.
