120423 HRC MinutesCITY OF NEW HOPE 4401 XYLON AVENUE NORTH NEW HOPE, MINNESOTA 55428 Human Rights Commission December 4, 2023 Regular Meeting City Hall CALL TO ORDER Chair Donna Meyer called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. ROLL CALL Present: Kendra Curry Kaamil Hassan Maria Leon Matthew London Mindy London Donna Meyer Trista Rehnke Diane Ruiz Absent: Allison Isenberg City Liaison: Chief Tim Hoyt (absent) Brad Kallio, New Hope Crime Prevention Officer Guests: Kathi Hemken, Mayor AGENDA APPROVAL Commissioner Ruiz made a motion to accept the December 4, 2023, agenda, seconded by Commissioner Matthew London. All voted in favor. MINUTES APPROVAL Commissioner Mindy London made a motion to accept the November 6, 2023, minutes, seconded by Commissioner Matthew London. All voted in favor. OPEN FORUM Recognition at Council Meeting - Officer Kallio noted that the city wanted to recognize out going Commissioners at an upcoming City Council meeting. Potential date is January 22, 2024. Election Judges Needed - Chair Meyer noted that Election Judges are needed. March 5th is the next primary election. Half day or full day spots are available. Reach out to Val Leone at city hall if interested. Training is provided. Donut Make You Wonder - Commissioner Leon indicated that Broadway Village would like to host a Donut You Make You Wonder session. Mayor Hemken indicated that Aaron Thelen is the person to connect with on this. DISCUSSION ITEMS AND REPORTS HRC Membership - Commission will have three openings in 2024. Up to two positions can be filled by student members. o Commissioner Donna Meyer and Trista Rehnke will be done in December 2023 and not renewing their appointments. - Community members are always welcome to attend meetings. - Please let the city know if guests will be attending a meeting. 2023 Subcommittee Updates - Community Conversations – Lead Donna Meyer - No update this month. - Chair Meyer will compile the notes and findings from the conversations. - Sunnyside Park Sponsorship – Lead Trista Rehnke - Sponsorship requires cleaning the park 3 times per year. - 2023 cleanings – May 20th, August 19th, October 22nd - If this isn’t a 2024 focus for the HRC, someone will need to communicate with the city and terminate the park sponsorship. - Outreach – Lead Matthew London - Confirmed with Beth that she will push out the community award information. - Colors of the World – Lead Mindy London - Trunk or Treat event was a success despite the rain. . - Hispanic Heritage Celebration – Lead Diane Ruiz - Tentative date 7/20/2024, Northwood Park HRC Officer Positions - Officer elections were held. - Chair – Kendra Curry - CoChair – Diane Ruiz - Secretary – Allison Isenberg Upcoming Meeting Dates: - 2024: 1/8, 1/29 (Feb mtg), 3/4, 4/1, 5/6, 6/3, no July meeting, 8/5, 9/2 (Labor Day – meeting needs to move), 10/7, 11/4, 12/2 - Note meeting date changes for January (due to New Year’s) and February. NEW BUSINESS None COMMUNICATION & INFORMATION SHARING Holiday Dinner - December 16th at 5:30 pm at Emerald Pointe. The Grinch will be in attendance! Santa Parade - December 9th at 5:00 pm, will cover Robbinsdale, Crystal and New Hope. - Map of the route on the city website. Blue Santa - HRC will plan to help prepare on Tuesday, December 19th at 6:00 pm. If help isn’t needed, HRC will be notified. - Event is December 20th. NEXT MEETING The next meeting is Monday, January 8th at 7:00 pm. ADJOURNMENT Commissioner Hassan made a motion to adjourn the meeting; seconded by Commissioner Mindy London. All voted in favor.
