080723 HRC MinutesCITY OF NEW HOPE 4401 XYLON AVENUE NORTH NEW HOPE, MINNESOTA 55428 Human Rights Commission August 7, 2023 Regular Meeting City Hall CALL TO ORDER Chair Donna Meyer called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. ROLL CALL Present: Kendra Curry Kaamil Hassan Allison Isenberg Maria Leon Matthew London Mindy London Donna Meyer Trista Rehnke Diane Ruiz Absent: Ephraim Uwalaka City Liaison: Chief Tim Hoyt (absent) Brad Kallio, New Hope Crime Prevention Officer Guests: Linette Berget, Citizen AGENDA APPROVAL Commissioner Isenberg made a motion to accept the August 7, 2023, agenda, seconded by Commissioner Mindy London. All voted in favor. MINUTES APPROVAL Commissioner Curry made a motion to accept the June 5, 2023, minutes, seconded by Commissioner Isenberg. All voted in favor. OPEN FORUM Introductions & Welcome - Welcome to Linette Berget attending the meeting with Commissioner Ruiz. Commissioner Hassan - Commissioner Hassan explained his recent absences. DISCUSSION ITEMS AND REPORTS HRC Membership - Commission is full at this time. - Community members are always welcome to attend meetings. Please let the city know if guests will be attending a meeting. 2023 Subcommittee Updates - Community Conversations – Lead Donna Meyer - Final event will be August 29th at Liberty Park. 6:00 – 7:00 pm. - Had some good learning opportunities and made changes after the event in June. Shortened the timeframe. - Suggestion to split into two teams. One to walk through park telling people about the event. One to stay near the food and have conversations. - Sunnyside Park Sponsorship – Lead Trista Rehnke - Must clean the park 3 times per year. - First cleaning – May 20th. - Second cleaning – August 19th, 10:00 am, please bring gloves. - Third cleaning – this fall, will schedule next time . - Outreach – Lead Matthew London - Community Conversation posts being sent to Beth. - Working on the Community Award, took the existing information, added submission dates of Jan – March. Will send to Val & Beth to review and consider. It is the same program, just refined it to have annual dates so it can be better promoted. - Colors of the World – Lead Mindy London - Rotary Club gave us $500. - Going to meet with the Lions. - Book selected: Bryan Skanavk – Be Nice. The End. He has donated the books to use. - Contacted Crayola to request donations but they are out for the year. Need to do that earlier. - Prepping the letters for teachers and parents. - Will meet to prep packets for delivery. - Hispanic Heritage Celebration – Lead Diane Ruiz - Talked to Susan Rader, they will waive the park registration fee. Discussed using Northwoods park vs. Civic Center. - Looking at a Saturday in July 2024. 2023 Meeting Dates: - 2023: 10/2, 11/6, 12/4 NEW BUSINESS Commissioner Appreciation Event - City Bus Tour is September 19th, 4:45 – 7:15 pm. - RSVP by Sept 1. Trunk & Treat - Will not be held with City Day this year. - Will be October 26th. Can still hold Colors of the World at that time. HRC could also have a decorated trunk outside. - Add to the agenda for further discussion next month. Need to decide when to decorate, if there should be craft kits, do a trunk, etc. COMMUNICATION & INFORMATION SHARING National Night Out - City had great participation and it went well! NEXT MEETING The next meeting is Wednesday, September 6th at 7:00 pm. ADJOURNMENT Commissioner Ruiz made a motion to adjourn the meeting; seconded by Commissioner Curry. All voted in favor.
