100322 HRC MinutesCITY OF NEW HOPE 4401 XYLON AVENUE NORTH NEW HOPE, MINNESOTA 55428 Human Rights Commission October 3, 2022 Regular Meeting City Hall CALL TO ORDER Chair Meyer called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. ROLL CALL Present: Kendra Curry Allison Isenberg Mindy London Donna Meyer Trista Rehnke Zachary Snabes Absent: NA City Liaison: Chief Tim Hoyt Guests: Kathi Hemken, Mayor Rich Johnson, Director of HR Walker MacBeath, HR Specialist AGENDA APPROVAL Commissioner Curry made a motion to accept the October 3, 2022, agenda, seconded by Commissioner Isenberg. All voted in favor. MINUTES APPROVAL Commissioner Snabes made a motion to accept the September 6, 2022, minutes, seconded by Commissioner London. All voted in favor. OPEN FORUM DE&I Follow Up Conversation - Rich Johnson and Walker MacBeath returned to the HRC meeting to update the Commission on DE&I initiatives. - They have reviewed the information from other cities and feel that New Brighton has a good policy that could be used as a reference. The city does have a mission and vision statement but nothing that calls out DE&I specifically. - The city provides DE&I training for staff and recently has improved the training to make it more interactive. - They continue to work to increase diversity among staff. They detailed the recruitment process and steps. - Rich provided the 2020 census data for the city. DISCUSSION ITEMS AND REPORTS HRC Membership - The HRC has four open seats on the commission. Two seats can be filled by High School Students. Applications are available from the city. - One new application has been received. - Aiysha Mustapha inquired about having a student from Highview being allowed to be on the HRC. The ByLaws need to be reviewed in order to properly answer this question. 2022 Sub-Committees - Expectations o Sub-committees are expected to meet throughout the month, outside of the regular HRC meeting. The Lead will report back at the HRC meeting. - Colors of the World / Dream Big (Donna Meyer – Lead) o Temporary tattoos are on order. o Kendra & Donna will set up at City Hall on 10/24, starting at 8:00 am. o Open House is at City Hall on 10/25, 4:00 – 7:00 pm. o Display will be up for a week and through City Day. o Schools have asked for the program to be expanded to all classrooms. This is not financially viable at this time. - Community Conversations (Donna Meyer – Lead) o Summer sessions have concluded and the summary was sent out. Copies will be provided to the City Council. o A board with post-its for community members to provide feedback will be available during the Colors of the World Open House. - Sunnyside Park & Volunteer Coordination (Trista Rehnke – Lead) o Park cleaned on May 21st and August 14th. o Next scheduled park clean up date - Saturday, October 15th at 10:00 am. (Oct 22nd as back up date if needed.) - Marketing (Allison Isenberg – Lead) o Spotlight of the Quarter nomination form sent to Val, shared with Rich. Then it will be publicized. o HRC Brochure will be reviewed and updated. Once complete, will have another Commission review it as well. 2022 Meeting Dates: - 11/7, 12/5 - 2023: 1/2, 2/6, 3/6, 4/3, 5/1, 6/5, 8/7, 9/5, 10/2, 11/6, 12/4 City Bus Tour & Commission Recognition Recap - Tour of the city was September 13th. - Commissioners enjoyed meeting other Commissioners and seeing the updates and new businesses in the city. - Affordable housing in the city discussion. City Day - October 27th, 5:00 – 7:00pm at City Hall. - Brad Kallio will be asked if the HRC has a booth that needs to be covered. NEW BUSINESS NA COMMUNICATION & INFORMATION SHARING Tri City Community Engagement Event - October 12th, 6:30 pm, Crystal Community Center - New Hope, Robbinsdale and Crystal Police Departments will be represented for an open dialog with citizens. Empty Bowls Fundraising Event - March 7, 2023, at Cooper High School NEXT MEETING The next meeting is November 7th at 7:00 pm. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 8:55 pm.
