110722 HRC MinutesCITY OF NEW HOPE 4401 XYLON AVENUE NORTH NEW HOPE, MINNESOTA 55428 Human Rights Commission November 7, 2022 Regular Meeting City Hall CALL TO ORDER CoChair Curry called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. ROLL CALL Present: Kendra Curry Allison Isenberg Mindy London Trista Rehnke Diane Ruiz Absent: Donna Meyer Zachary Snabes City Liaison: Chief Tim Hoyt Guests: Kathi Hemken, Mayor Brad Kallio, Officer Community Services Aiysha Mustapha, Community Member and Family, Community Engagement Director for the schools Maria Leon, Broadway Village AGENDA APPROVAL Commissioner Isenberg made a motion to accept the November 7, 2022, agenda, seconded by Commissioner London. All voted in favor. MINUTES APPROVAL Commissioner London made a motion to accept the October 3, 2022, minutes, seconded by Commissioner Isenberg. All voted in favor. OPEN FORUM NA DISCUSSION ITEMS AND REPORTS HRC Membership - The HRC has three open seats on the commission. Up to two seats can be filled by High School Students from ISD 281 schools. Applications are available from the city. - Diane Ruiz is a new member of the Human Rights Commission. Tonight her is first meeting. Welcome! - Another city member has inquired about a position. 2022 Sub-Committees - Expectations o Sub-committees are expected to meet throughout the month, outside of the regular HRC meeting. The Lead will report back at the HRC meeting. - Colors of the World / Dream Big (Donna Meyer – Lead) o Open House is at City Hall on 10/25, 4:00 – 7:00 pm. o Display will be up for a week and through City Day. o Paulette Bonneur, local author, attended the event with her books. o Great pictures from the kids were displayed. Wonderful engagement and conversations with the attendees. o Many great comments and conversations during City Day later that week. o Thank you to the volunteers for the Colors Event and for City Day. There was great attendance at the City Day event. Lots of face painting! - Community Conversations (Donna Meyer – Lead) o No additional events scheduled at this time. - Sunnyside Park & Volunteer Coordination (Trista Rehnke – Lead) o Park cleaned on May 21st, August 14th and October 15th o Thank you to everyone for helping keep the park clean! - Marketing (Allison Isenberg – Lead) o HRC Brochure has been reviewed and revamped. New content has been sent to Beth for getting it created. o Spotlight of the Quarter will be paused. The city has asked to ulitize existing award programs and partner with other groups vs creating another one. Allison will reach out regarding the Good Citizenship award. Brad indicated that the Police Department also gives out an award to citizens and the HRC might be able to join in on those. o Juneteenth proclamation with the city was completed earlier this year. Goal for 2023 is to build upon that with education and/or event. Allison will check with Golden Valley because they may have held events. Minneapolis also has events. Need to ensure we have the right people at the table to provide accurate education, historical content and context 2022 Meeting Dates: - 12/5 – December meeting will include elections for 2023. - 2023: 1/2, 2/6, 3/6, 4/3, 5/1, 6/5, 8/7, 9/5, 10/2, 11/6, 12/4 HRC By-Laws - By-Laws will be sent out to the group so they can be reviewed at a future meeting. - Copy was provided to Brad Kallio so he can have them stored in the city files again. NEW BUSINESS NA COMMUNICATION & INFORMATION SHARING Round Dance, - November 18, 2022, 6 – 8 pm at RMS. - Traditional Native dance and celebration. - Additional information in the attached flyer. ISD 281 December Event – Winter Storytelling - Aiysha Mustapha will provide more details as they are finalized. Toy Fest with the Isenbergs – 16th year! - December 2 & 3, 2022. Open house and toy donations collection. - Toys, gift cards and cash are accepted. Donations will be distributed to the New Hope Police Department and NEAR Food Shelf. A toy wish list will be provided. Gifts for older children are always needed. Santa Parade - December 10, 2022 - New Hope, Crystal and Robbinsdale involved. Blue Santa with the New Hope Police Department - December 21, 2022 - Gifts were will be purchased and wrapped beforehand. The party on the 21st will include food and Santa! Empty Bowls Fundraising Event - March 7, 2023, at Cooper High School NEXT MEETING The next meeting is December 5th at 7:00 pm. ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned at 8:10 pm.
