080221 HRC MinutesCITY OF NEW HOPE 4401 XYLON AVENUE NORTH NEW HOPE, MINNESOTA 55428 Human Rights Commission August 2, 2021 Regular Meeting In Person City Hall CALL TO ORDER Co-Chair Curry called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. ROLL CALL Present: Kendra Curry Heather Fruen Allison Isenberg Mindy London Trista Rehnke Danielle Saima Jennifer Toavs Absent: Donna Meyer Heaven Shaw Zachary Snabes City Liaison: Chief Tim Hoyt Guests: Brad Kallio, Community Service Officer Brandi Hearn, Administrative Specialist New Hope PD AGENDA APPROVAL Commissioner Toavs made a motion to accept the August 2, 2021, agenda, seconded by Commissioner Saima. All voted in favor. MINUTES APPROVAL Commissioner Isenberg made a motion to accept the June 7, 2021, minutes, seconded by Commissioner Saima. All voted in favor. OPEN FORUM Chief Hoyt - Tri-City Community Engagement Forum, held by Crystal, New Hope and Robbinsdale Police Chiefs - Saturday, October 2, 2021, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, Crystal Community Center - Police and Community BBQ at Broadway Village was held recently, it was a huge success. Commissioner Fruen - Asked for more information about local Representative Cedrick Frazier – pretextual stops work. - Representative Frazier lives in New Hope. He was on the City Council before running for the State level Representative position last fall. - Chief Hoyt will ask Representative Frazier to attend a future meeting. DISCUSSION ITEMS AND REPORTS 2021 Committee Updates: Colors of the World Crayon Donation (Lead – Kendra Curry) - Ready for the fall. Each Kindergarten class room will receive 1 book (“Promise” by Labron James) and each child will receive a packet of crayons. Increase HRC awareness/Facebook posts/Marketing (Lead - Allison Isenberg) - Team submitted a July 4th/Independence Day Facebook post. City had a post ready to go but used some of the content. - Received deadlines for each of the different city communication outlets. Will have future posts regarding Food Shelf Resources, Can Do Canines, Get to Know Your City Council. - Working on completing documentation to request a Proclamation. Workshop on Home Ownership (Lead - Danielle Saima) - Working with Valerie Anderson, Relator and Multi-Culturual Real Estate Agent Council - Looking to create a two-part seminar series: o Basics of home ownership, general information o Resource fair: home inspectors, loans, etc. Community Conversations - Race & Police Interaction (Lead- Donna Meyer) - On hold until September. LGTBQ Group Partnership (Lead - Trista Rehnke) - Volunteered at Golden Valley Pride on June 12. The event was a drive thru donation event/celebration. They are planning for their 5th year anniversary celebration next year and welcome the HRC partnership. - Reached out to Twin Cities Pride which was held in July this year (usually in June). We did not hear back from the volunteer coordinator until the night before the event. We will look to partner with them next year. - Working on creating HRC t-shirts. City Day - Saturday, October 9, 2021, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm - City Hall - HRC will have a table at the event. - Commissioners Curry, Isenberg, Saima and London will attend. Commissioner Appreciation Event - Thursday, September 9th, 4:45 pm – 7:30 pm - Bus tour around New Hope, boxed lunch at the Golf Course - RSVP by August 31, 2021 Sunnyside Park Clean-up - HRC sponsors Sunnyside Park and has committed to cleaning the park three times each year. - Park was cleaned on 3/27/21, 6/5/21. - Final clean up will be Saturday, October 16, 2021, 10:00 am. Meet at the Playground. Garbage bags will be provided. - Will send HRC members to the other unsponsored parks again. Commissioner Rehnke will divide up and distribute the list of parks and assignments prior to October. NEW BUSINESS NA COMMUNICATION & INFORMATION SHARING National Night Out - Tuesday, August 3, 2021 - 70 parties are scheduled to be held around New Hope. NEXT MEETING The next meeting is Tuesday, August 31 at 7:15 pm. - * Change is due to Labor Day holiday on the 1st Monday of September..* - Meeting will be in person at City Hall but due to increasing COVID levels, watch for alternate virtual options.
