Adjournment City of Golden Valley – Restrictive Covenants Information From: Brandon Bell <bbell@newhopemn.gov> Sent: Tuesday, October 6, 2020 2:52 PM To: Scott Slawson <sslawson@newhopemn.gov> Subject: FW: Just Deeds - Minnesota Scott, So a couple weeks ago Aaron Thelen of the Parks and Rec department told me about a program in Golden Valley called the Just Deeds program. It is a program where the main focus is to eliminate racial and religious restrictive covenants in deeds that were place there in the early 20th century to encourage segregation in communities. It turns out they didn’t extend this far beyond the cities. However, Kirsten at Golden Valley said they would be more than happy to have the NH HRC partner with them on the project as it includes other matters as well. This is the email she sent me. I apologize, I am just realizing that the HRC met last night, so I wish I would have gotten this out to you earlier. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this. I am happy to share information about the Just Deeds project and we would love to have New Hope join the Just Deeds Coalition. Please pass along my contact information to the HRC liaison. Additionally, I have provided some brief information for you attached, and our website information here: https://www.goldenvalleymn.gov/equity-and-inclusion/restrictive-covenants.php We will be presenting at the Golden Valley City Council meeting next Wednesday, which includes more about the consequential inequities of structural and systemic racism on our communities. We are also asking the City to discharge 61 discriminatory covenants found on City-owned property. I look forward to working with New Hope on this truly important topic!
