110220 HRC MinutesCITY OF NEW HOPE 4401 XYLON AVENUE NORTH NEW HOPE, MINNESOTA 55428 Human Rights Commission November 2, 2020 Regular Meeting Via Zoom CALL TO ORDER Chair Meyer called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. ROLL CALL Present: Kendra Curry Heather Fruen Donna Meyer Trista Rehnke Danielle Saima Ose Sesay Heaven Shaw Zachary Snabes Jennifer Toavs Absent: Mindy London City Liaison: Interim Chief Scott Slawson Guests: Mayor Kathi Hemken Tim Hoyt, future Chief of Police Allison Isenberg AGENDA APPROVAL Commissioner Curry made a motion to accept the November 2, 2020, agenda, seconded by Commissioner Toavs. All voted in favor. MINUTES APPROVAL Commissioner Curry made a motion to accept the October 5, 2020 minutes, seconded by Commissioner Shaw. All voted in favor. OPEN FORUM Open Forum Interim Chief Scott Slawson - Introduction of Allison Isenberg, city resident, volunteer - Introduction of new Chief of Police, Tim Hoyt. Tim will start new position on 11/9/20. Allison Isenberg - Looking for ways to be involved in the city and connect. DISCUSSION ITEMS AND REPORTS New Commissioner Introductions - Danielle Saima Human Rights Commission Membership - HRC is currently full. - Community members are still encouraged to attend meetings and participate in community events. Meetings are open to the public. Need to contact the city to be invited to the virtual zoom meetings. Sunnyside Park Clean-Up - HRC has committed to cleaning the park at least 3 times per year. - Cleaning dates in 2020: 7/11, 8/29, 10/17 Woodsy the Owl - Federal Government program – Give a Hoot, Don’t Pollute - Could this be a possible partnership with Parks and Rec? - Chair Meyer will reach out to Susan Rader, Director of Parks and Rec. - Other possible related projects: o Paint projects with kids in the parks o Mascot costume - Trash cans missing from some parks. o Mayor Hemken will ask about this. Some were removed due to personal/home trash being put in them. League of Women Voters – 2020 Vote Assistance - Commissioner Curry previously shared opportunities to assist with the candidate forums. - HRC will continue to maintain the relationship with LWV and partner with them on events. Removal of Racially Restrictive Covenants - It has been confirmed by Hennepin County that there were no restrictive covenants in the City of New Hope. - There is no work to do on this project. - The City of Golden Valley HRC would still like to partner with the HRC on future events or projects. Citizen Advisory Commission Meeting - Meeting is January 9 or February 9 - HRC has been asked to send a representative to the meeting to connect with CAC to share ideas and partner on items or events. 2021 Election Prep - Positions available: Chair, Co-Chair, Secretary - Chair: facilitate meetings, connect with community, networking - Co-Chair: facilitate meeting in the Chair’s absence - Secretary: record meeting minutes, prepare meeting agenda, distribute meeting minutes and agenda prior to next meeting - New members are encouraged to partner with existing officers if they are interested in learning more about the position. - Voting will be done virtually by sending an email to Chief Hoyt. 2021 Planning Prep - Vision board will be virtual via JamBoard. Commissoner Shaw will send out to the link to the document. - Gather ideas of what you want to see the HRC to, put it on a “post-it” so it can be discussed and the year planned out. - Commissioner Shaw demo’d the JamBoard and how to create a sticky note, type on it, save it. NEW BUSINESS NA COMMUNICATION & INFORMATION SHARING City of Bloomington - Chair Meyer sat in on City of Bloomington Racial Equity Business Plan Listening Session. Community members talked about racial climate in the city. - Chair Meyer will forward the powerpoint regarding how to engage with community members.
